Is Real Estate A Good Career For A Working Mum?

6 min read

When you’ve got the children to spend time with, to raise right and keep healthy and happy, the idea of a career can fall by the wayside.

You don’t quite have the time to dedicate to working 40 hours or more per week, and you sometimes feel quite sorry for that. Of course, you wouldn’t change your situation for the world, but you do wish you could find a job that would both allow your love for your kids, as well as your ambition to be on top of your game.

Well, when it comes to real estate, you might just be able to find that balance! After all, it’s a lot of investment, a lot of overseeing, and not too much of anything else. So if you can spare a couple hours per day each week, and you have a strong business mind to you, this might just be a great career start for you. Here’s just a few reasons why.

It’s a Perfect Definition of a Side Hustle!

Real estate can be a great side hustle as it doesn’t require your 24/7 attention - at least, not in the same way your kids do. Sure, you need to be available through the usual working hours of the day (9 to 5), but there’s a lot of flexibility within that. If you’ve got a wifi signal for any emails, as well as being able to scan the housing market, and you’re near a phone at all times, you’ll have the availability in the bag!

It Can Constantly Make You Money

If you do invest in real estate, you can start letting out the rooms to people looking for a reasonable rent cost - a.k.a., the people you can actually make money through. Seeing as you’re a mother yourself, you know how stretched money can get, and you want to be able to provide a solution to anyone else in a similar position; it’s definitely a gap in the market you could try to fulfill. You have the working knowledge a lot of the best entrepreneurs out there are looking for, and that could make this career path a great fit for you.

Similarly, if you find a good freehold property for sale, you’ll be able to build and renovate a lot further out than just the interior of a house. Renovation is a huge part of the real estate world, after all. You’ll have the plot of land to work with too, and that means you can start planning extensions. You’ll have a lot more to offer the market than a pre existing block of flats can manage.

Maybe a loft where the attic used to be, maybe a conservatory for elderly couples looking to enjoy the garden in their retirement home, maybe even just a couple of extra rooms, so you can split the original house into two different flats. All in all, owning a freehold means you have a bigger opportunity for making money, as you’ll be able to service more than one type of client all at once.

It Could Provide a Holiday Home for You and the Kids

And ultimately, if you ever get tired of letting other people live in the properties you pay for, and you have a free period after a tenant’s lease is up and they’ve moved out, you could always repurpose a house to act as a holiday home for a while. You and the kids could move out there for a couple of weeks during the summer, because you’ve earned plenty so far to allow you to do so, and take a break from working from home! And if you have an overseas property to your name, the more’s the better.

So, Do You Fancy a Career in Real Estate?

If you want to get back into the swing of things with your career, you might just want to think about opening up some kind of real estate business. Whether you want to throw yourself in fully, and dedicate a good portion of the evening when the kids have gone to bed to finding a house to apply for a mortgage for, or you just put £10 on the line to get on the real estate ladder, this could be the job for you.

You’ll have the time, you’ll have the resources, and there’s always advice out there for you to rely on; it’s a very large industry after all! Why not just give the idea some thought?
