88% of homes contain a laptop, PC, or smart device in the UK alone. While you might use yours for browsing the web, there is much more to your home computer than you think.

And suppose you are stuck for cash or worried about the new Omicron variant of Covid. In that case, there are numerous computer-based remote jobs you can start right away. Some of these jobs require nothing more than a keyboard. Others require additional peripherals such as a webcam and microphone.

Teaching and Distance Learning

Throughout 2020 and 2021, the use of video conferencing technology increased significantly. Apps like Zoom, Skype and Microsoft Teams allow you to interact with people in real-time via video communication. All these apps are free and are available on multiple devices. One area that benefits significantly during restrictions and lockdown is teaching. For example, as a Spanish tutor, you can continue your business or employment using remote technologies. Unfortunately, many colleges and universities still hold online distance learning classrooms because of Covid concerns.

Instructional Videos

Remote video communication apps are excellent for live interaction. Yet, your business or job might be more instructional in nature. Conferencing apps are capable of this, but internet connections aren't always reliable. Therefore, you can record, edit and upload instructional videos to your blog, vlog or chosen platform. For example, as a yoga instructor, social distancing means you might not operate at total capacity. However, you can record your yoga class using a simple webcam. Then you can edit as required using Adobe Premiere or free software like HitFilm Express. These can then be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo.

Telemarketing and Sales

Outsourcing is an important industry that supplies extra functionality in a B2B capacity. For example, it isn't uncommon for large companies to outsource sales teams to professionals handling large volumes. At-home remote workers are included in the telemarketing and sales outsourcing workforce, and you can easily do this from the comfort of your home. All you need is a working PC, an internet connection and a microphone for speaking to customers. Upwork.com is excellent for finding such jobs, and typically, no previous experience is required, and training is provided.

Call Centre Operations

Like telemarketing, call centre operations are excellent for remote work. And it doesn't have the added pressure of being able to sell, which is a challenging skill to learn. Typically, you will handle inbound calls on behalf of a third-party company. For example, you may be assigned complaints handling for a business such as British Gas, or you could be answering queries on behalf of a food manufacturer. The list is almost endless, and you might even be doing something different each day. A working computer, reliable internet and a microphone are required.

Freelance Writing

Perhaps you enjoy typing and fancy yourself as a budding writer. Fortunately for you, tons of freelance writing jobs are available on the internet. You can get paid for fanfiction, copywriting, editing articles, ghostwriting and SEO-based web content delivery. The pay you can earn varies by sector, but if you find the right provider, you can make a living with online freelance writing if you treat it like a full-time job. While you usually won't be expected to write like a New York Times journalist, a good understanding of English is required. Yet, you can make more money if you are fluent in more than one language.

Blogging and eCommerce

Making and developing a website has bever been easier. No longer is an expert required to design and develop a site. Instead, site builders like WordPress and SquareSpace allow you to purchase a domain, configure a site and public content quickly and easily. Blogging and eCommerce sites are popular among these platforms. Although you won't make money straight away (and don't believe anyone who claims otherwise), you can develop a respected site within a niche. With consistent updates and proper SEO, you can gain niche authority and search engine ranking, further monetization options such as affiliate marketing and paid content.

Content Management

If you develop a site using WordPress or a similar platform, you will gain invaluable content management experience. WordPress and Squarespace operate using Content Management Systems. This refers to the back-end operations used to create, manage, and upload a website's content. For example, creating a new blog post or web page, editing or creating the content for that page and image manipulation and management. You may also be experienced installing plugins and intersystem connection management for services like Google Data Analytics and Amazon Associates. In addition, there are jobs for CMS, and CMS can be done remotely because of the online nature of the work.

IT Support

Should your skills be more technical, you can provide remote support for managed IT services or on behalf of a third party client. Typically, you will aid and guide PC users with queries ranging from bugged email clients and OS boot problems to data recovery and cloud system management. Access to an adequate PC capable of operating a virtual system with reliable internet is typically required. VMWare will be supplied by your employer, but you may be expected to know how to configure and use it. Therefore, online IT support jobs aren't recommended for beginners.

Virtual Assistance

Not to be confused with Amazon Alexa and Apple's Siri, virtual assistance is helping companies with their secretarial and administrative needs. While you cannot physically help out with paperwork or filing, you can remotely perform many of the duties usually involved. For example, as a virtual assistant, you could be responsible for document planning and preparation, scheduling and preparing reports. You could also offer telephone answering services. Virtual assistants are usually self-employed, yet you can perform well with a basic PC and free apps such as Google Docs.

Data Entry

One of the oldest remote jobs is data entry. Data entry typically tasks you with accurate input with strict deadlines. So, if you are adept at typing, this might be a suitable role for you. Data entry typically requires no experience, and all training is provided. However, minimum typing speeds are usually needed, and you will probably be tested. Therefore, you should only apply for a data entry role if you are particularly fast and accurate. You can improve your typing skills with apps like Typing Tutor.
