You may have had an office-based job before. But you may have eventually realized that being hunched in an office cubicle all day had started taking its toll on your small children who need extra care from you.

So you resigned from your office-based job and then landed a new one that lets you work from home.

However, having a home-based job has its pitfalls, foremost of which is that you might find it difficult juggling between doing your work and taking care of your kids. The good news is that you can work from home and look after your small children at the same time with these tips:

  1. Hire a babysitter for your small children
Multitasking kills productivity which is why you should focus as much as possible in doing only one thing at a time. You’ll thus have to concentrate on getting work done in your home-based job since it pays for everything that your children need. However, consistently doing so might prove to be a challenge once your kids suddenly want to play with you.

Instead of forcing yourself to be there for your small children at the expense of your home-based job, you could hire a babysitter for them instead for a few days a week. Sure, it might take a while for your kids to adjust to their nanny, but they’ll eventually learn to love them over time.

  2. Don’t pressure yourself too much over your home-based job
On the other hand, if you don’t have the budget to hire a babysitter, you might want to look back as to why you ditched your office-based job for a home-based one in the first place. After all, you won’t run out of work to do in your home-based job. But your children would only remain small for a short amount of time.

Because of this you should slow down a bit with your work by taking breaks and spending some quality time with your children. Remember with a stay at home job, as long as you get the job done in the day that’s all that counts. You’re not restricted to time. If you’re able to you can get up earlier in the day before they get out of bed and get started to help you get ahead. It’s not uncommon for many stay at home parents to get up between 4am-6am in the morning to get a few hours in.

  3. Have your children covered by family health insurance
There’s absolutely no telling at all when any of your kids could get sick. The good thing about working from home is that you can be there to take care of them without taking too much time off work.

In your previous office-based job, your employer may have offered family health insurance to you. But now that you’re working from home, you’ll have to get it on your own as nobody else will.

You can get a low-cost family health insurance for a start, though it may not cover certain illnesses that any of your kids might catch. Look at different policies to see what they cover to find the best solution for you.

  4. Work out activities for each day your children will play
Depending on the age of your children, it’s a good idea to set-up different activities each day that you’re children can play and stay occupied while you work. Some activities could be:
  • Painting
  • Drawing/Colouring In
  • Play Dough
  • Gluing
  • Stickers
  • Toy cars
  • Toy computer
  • Ball games

These are just some of the different things that can keep your child occupied while you work.

Conclusion

More than three-fourths of the entire global workforce are working from home according to a worldwide survey conducted last 2015. Thus, landing a home-based job isn’t an entirely novel concept anymore as more and more people are increasingly favoring it over traditional office-based jobs. You may have even contributed to that statistic when you decided to quit your previous office-based job and apply for a home-based one. However, it may have belatedly dawned on you that the latter had been taking away some precious bonding time between you and your kids. Fortunately, you can turn that around by following the above-listed tips on how to work from home and look after your small children.
