When you're in the midst of raising littles, the idea of finding a manageable side gig to bring in some extra cash can be quite appealing.
A lot of mums think they can turn to blogging to accomplish this goal, and while it's a perfectly good option, it does take a few tricks to really make it profitable. Below, we've provided some ideas that should help, allowing you to fine-tune your sight, make it marketable, and bring in that extra income your family needs.
Develop a Niche
You'll first have to figure out exactly who you want to read your blog, and if possible make it a fairly specific audience. For instance, "mums of toddlers" isn't a narrow enough group for you to be able to grab it and run with it. You need something smaller, like "mums of triplets" or "raising children like Duchess Kate," or "working mums who work out." Take the time to evaluate yourself, consider what interests you, and find out which potential target audience is the best fit. Ultimately if you find a topic you're passionate about with built-in readers, you'll be setting yourself up for success.
Find A Trending-Up Topic
As something of an alternative to the ideas above, you can also find a topic that's trending up and devote yourself to learning enough about it to blog toward a growing audience. These days, for instance, betting comes to mind as a wildly popular but under-covered subject. All around the UK and Europe, mums and dads engage in betting activity, whether through casino games or sports wagering online. Yet it's hard to find beginner tips, simple-but-informative suggestions, and so on. In short, it's a niche you could make your own. Whether that means explaining the very basics of betting, covering the insured betting options so many beginners gravitate to, or offering tips on specific betting opportunities, there's plenty of material for any blog. This is just one example, and it may not be your thing at all - but the bigger idea, to zero in on a trendy topic, is worth considering if your goal is to profit.
Affiliate Links
Affiliate links are URLs that you use to connect your readers with shopping opportunities, and some companies will pay for your referrals. ShareASale and Commission Junction are some such companies, and Amazon has its own similar programme as well. Sign up online for an affiliate account (you'll need to have an existing blog to link to because they'll want to review your existing content to make sure you'll be able to market successfully), and then you can start applying for partner companies. Try to choose ones with products you actually use, or ones that might be relevant to your usual audience; it's easier to work in natural links that way.
Offer Goods or Services
Many mums already know how to knit or sew (or have other creative talents), so setting up an Etsy shop to pair with a blog could be easy. You can include links on your blog posts to Etsy listings and products you make, as well as provide exclusive coupon codes for your readers only. You may also put together Pinterest boards. These kinds of efforts go a little bit beyond blogging and approach setting up a small business, but they can certainly result in some healthy side income.
Mums have a seemingly endless range of talents, and finding a way to market any of those talents through a blog can enable you to stay home and earn extra income (as well as likely spend less on nannies!). It can be a lot to handle given the 24/7 job of looking after the little ones, but if you find the right way to go about it, blogging can be a perfect fit nonetheless.
