Raising a child can be a difficult task on its own, and that is before you bring any employment into it. Having a career while parenting a child is a possibility, and one that can be extremely rewarding.
When you are at your place of work, you should also be treated no differently than any other employee. Likewise, if an employer is willing to make an alteration to one employee’s daily working pattern due to them being a parent, that same alteration should be made available to all. This means that you may be able to change some of your working hours to suit your child’s needs, such as working around school hours. If your employer makes allowances for one employee but refuses the same to you, you may feel discriminated against. If this is the case, speak to Wright Hassall for more information.
There are some jobs that you may find a bit more feasible to take if you still want to be able to do common mum tasks, such as taking your child to and from school.
Work from Home
You may have a role that you can undertake from home. This might still involve working for another company, but may also see you as your own employer. Whether you have a product that you sell, or a service you provide, working from home can be a fantastic way to gain an income while still being on call as a parent. It is important to remember that, when working for yourself, you may need to file your own tax returns, but this could potentially be turned into a joint activity with your child alongside their own maths homework.
Teaching Assistant
Working in a supportive role as a teaching assistant means you will be unavailable at the same time as your child. If you are able to work within their school, this may further aid you in being able to work while parenting. While it is unlikely that you would be placed in your child’s class, it does mean that you will be able to take them to school and pick them up when you finish for the day. Generally, the requirements for a teaching assistant are at GCSE level. While experience may be beneficial, it is not always necessary.
Part Time Roles
Part time work can also be a good choice for the working mum. Finding a role in any sector that you are qualified to undertake, and that fits in with your chosen hours, can bring you a bit of a life outside of parenting, as well as that all-important extra income.
No matter what you decide, it is important for you to have an identity outside of being a mother. If you have working dreams or goals that you have not yet achieved, considering undertaking an educational course from home may also be a good idea.
