Going back to work after you’ve had children can be one of the hardest things in the world. It’s a battle between head and heart: staying with your precious little one and getting back to making a living.
Some of you may love your job, and have such a hankering to go back you’ll know instinctively when to start working again. For other new working mothers it won’t be that easy. So how, and when, do you start getting ready for your return back to work?
Do What’s Right For You
The main thing to remember is that there is not one specific time frame for you to re-enter the world of work. It will be different for every mother.
Make sure you take your time with the decision, and don’t feel under pressure to rush straight back to work. There probably won’t be the perfect time when it feels right for you to go back.
According to The Guardian when you’re 80% sure you’re ready, just go for it. You can always talk through the timings with your friends and family, too.
Home Environment
Something you can do to make leaving your children at home that little bit easier is to make your home a safe environment as possible. You’ll feel better knowing you’ve done your best to make your home the best it can be for your kids. It’s more than childproofing a room, or leaving out their favourite toys.
Furthermore, starting back in full time work means delicately balancing several important aspects in your life, not least being sleep. Ensuring your bedroom is an ideal calming environment is of utmost importance given how precious sleep will now be; Direct Blinds can help with any updates your bedroom may need.
Meet With Your Boss
A great way of putting your mind at ease before re-entering your work environment is to meet up with your boss beforehand. You can use the meetings to discuss any qualms or questions you have. You can also use it as an opportunity to talk about your hours and how flexible your workplace can be with you or the need for a phased return. You could also discuss doing longer days over a shorter amount of time, or even whether there are opportunities for you to work from home.
New Skills
You may not feel like the old you when you go back to work, but that can be a good thing. Being a mother gives you a whole new set of skills you didn’t have before and you can absolutely bring these into your work environment. Your time management will be better, you can think on your feet and your multitasking is on a whole other level.
Embrace the fact you’re a working mother, you’re doing a great job and don’t let anyone tell you differently.
