7 Work from Home Jobs That Let You Practice Your Advice-Giving Skills

6 min read

As a mum, one of your main jobs is to give advice to your little one(s). So, whether you like it or not, there’s really no getting around the fact that you’re a designated provider of advice and guidance for one or more developing human beings.

The problem is, as most mums know all too well, once you get in that advisor/caretaker mindset, it can be difficult to stop exercising those motherly guidance-giving traits when dealing with others in your personal or professional life. Fortunately, there are a number of career options that will essentially let you get paid for mothering (guiding and developing) other grown adults. With that said, here are 6 work from home jobs that you can use to practice and profit from your advice-giving skills as a mum:

1. Remote Business Coach

If you have any experience in the world of business, be it as a retail store manager or even a small-time entrepreneur, you may want to leverage your advisory skills as a professional business coach.  The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) offers courses through providers like The BCF Group’s ILM Level 5 Coaching course – you can learn about the course here. The BCF Group is a UK-based provider of online learning, business coaching, management training, and health & safety training services. By completing their ILM coaching courses, you can earn an ILM level 5 coaching certificate to officially launch your career as a remote business coach.

You could also consider life or holistic coaching. Many coaches choose to work from home and run sessions using Zoom or video call. The Coaching Masters offer a basic certification, along with many other in depth coaching qualifications.

2. Online Consultant

Providing consultancy services is another way to earn a desirable income by using your motherly advice-giving prowess to guide others. While having experience in the field that you’re going to be providing consulting in will certainly help you land your first clients, many online consultants have been able to launch their careers by simply taking advanced courses in the topic they’re providing consultation on.

3. Virtual Assistant

If you have a well-rounded set of skills that are applicable in business, you could market yourself as a premium virtual assistant. A typical virtual assistant will perform typical admin and personal assistant tasks, but there are higher-paying virtual assistant jobs in which you’re expected to provide guidance or direction in certain areas. Earn a few certificates that prove your capabilities and you’ll become an appealing candidate for companies who need an extra hand and expertise.

4. Freelance Writer or Blogger

If you’re a decent writer, or you’re willing to put in the work to become one, you could convert advice into written words for a living. As a freelance writer, you’re essentially parenting other people on a wide variety of topics, just as you would with your own child as a mum. This correlation explains why there are so many mums who operate blogs. If managing a website and waiting for the advertising revenue to materialise doesn’t seem like an attractive option for you in the short-term, you could start out as a freelance writer instead, applying for clients and projects on major freelancing platforms for a faster reward.

5. Tech Support Agent

If you’re a mum who also has a love for technology, or you’re just more technically proficient than the average person, you could put your skills to use as a basic tech support agent. You won’t need to be an IT expert to provide advice in this field because most employers will equip you with a cheat sheet and comprehensive training that will teach you everything you need to know to provide accurate guidance.

6. Online Tutor

If you enjoy teaching academic subjects, becoming an online tutor is a great way to carry this passion over into a beneficial career path. As with the other jobs on this list, you’ll have the freedom to travel and relocate as you please, so that’s a major advantage that comes with teaching remotely via the internet instead of taking a local teaching job.

7. Remote Counsellor

As a mum, you’re going to be doing a great deal of counselling anyway, so you might as well profit from that skill and extend your efforts into helping others. Plus, by becoming an experienced counsellor, you’ll also be learning skills that will make you a better parent in the long run.

How Much is Your Advice Really Worth?

The idea of earning a hefty salary for providing advice can seem far-fetched to someone who has no experience in or knowledge of the advisory, coaching, and consulting industries. While the route to becoming a high-level business coach might require a bit more groundwork than the other opportunities on this list, it’s listed as the top option because it will typically provide the highest income potential. Some experienced business coaches are able to charge tens of thousands to deliver short seminars and presentations at corporate events, so that’s like a pinnacle achievement to aim and strive towards through ongoing educational efforts.
