From Full-Time To Working From Home

4 min read

Working from home is a dream that can become a reality. More people are making the switch from being employed by someone else, to being self-employed.

It is a potent thing when you find what it is that you love and you have figured out how to make an income from it.

There are a few steps that generally it is recommended that you take before you make the transition from employment to self-employed.

It Might Get Funky

The path to success isn’t always the smoothest. In fact, it can be some serious peaks and valleys while you learn how to run a business from your home. There are a few things that you will learn to balance. You do have more time available, but you will need to learn to maximise those hours. Money can often be a sticking point, but if you know that you have emergency loans as an option then, and some backup savings, then you can bridge those gaps with less stress.

Passion

If you have a real passion for something, like graphic design, writing, or numbers, then it pays to look at all of the ways that you can make money from it. There will be so many revenue options, and you might find that you have even more opportunities than you had firm envisioned. Typically we have really strong skills in the thing we are most passionate about, and that passion will get us through the really difficult times.

Experience

Before you dive headfirst into your new adventure, think about getting some experience. If you have some things in your portfolio when you leave full-time employment, you will have something to share with potential clients. If you are struggling to get that experience, in your spare time you can put together some examples of what you can do. You can offer your services to friends and local businesses to get a start.

Complicated?

Often we think we need so much more to start our at-home business or to go freelance than we actually do. So think about what it is you need to actually get started. Often it isn’t more than your computer and a few contacts. Business insurances, accounts and are essentials, but it won’t take long to get to grips with what you do, and do not need.

Organisation

Although if you watch many movies or TV shows, the self-employed person tends to be a mess - you should try not to be. Keeping yourself and your working space and times organised will put you in the mindset that this is work. Even if you love it, and want to spend as much time as possible in your loungewear, you should treat it as work. Each morning, once you have done the other household things, or the school drop off, make a list of everything that you need to accomplish in your working time. This will help to keep you on track.

When you decide to go out on your own, there are other considerations like registering to pay your personal taxes, VAT and more. It can be one of the most liberating things you’ll ever do, so it deserves careful consideration and the right foundations.
