Education is an important part of our children’s lives. After all, they will spend a lot of time there, having experiences and forming friendships that will affect their future for the rest of their lives.
Most people have strong memories of school, whether good or bad. Fostering a love of learning at an early stage is one of the best things you can do.
How much you want to get involved in your children’s school life is a decision you need to make. There is a balance between being involved and letting your children make their own way in this environment.
There are a number of ways you can show support and get involved, including:
Chaperone School Trips
School field trips and educational travel are important parts of school life. Getting kids out of the classroom to experience new things and learn in a different environment makes learning fun.
Most school’s don’t have enough staff for these trips, so ask parents a few parents to attend and help keep the children safe. Why not sign up for a few of these trips and get to see first-hand how your child and others are enjoying the experience? You can then talk about it at home.
Talk To Their Teacher
Other than school reports and maybe the parent-teacher conferences, you won’t get much information about your child’s performance at school unless there is a problem. Ask to talk to your child’s teacher periodically so that you can find out in a little more detail how they are doing. With this information, you then know if you need to help them more with particular skills or subject areas.
Join The PTA
Every school has a PTA, a group of parents and teachers that work to enrich the educational experience for children. This is usually in the form of fundraising and organising social events throughout the year. Being on a PTA is great for making friends and giving the children great experiences. Funds raised go towards resources for the school.
Become A School Governor
The overall strategic direction of a school is the responsibility of the school governors. They work to ensure that budgets are being spent well, challenging and developing policy. The board of governors also has the power to challenge the school leadership.
Read With Them
Studies have shown that reading regularly with children from a young age is one of the best things you can do for them. It improves their language, vocabulary and communication skills as well as builds their confidence and imagination. Children who are read to from an early age also tend to perform better academically at school.
Final Thoughts
There are lots of ways to become involved in your child’s learning experience throughout their lives. From working with them at home to being a school governor, it shows your child that they are supported and that their education is important to you. This can only be a good thing and will benefit them in so many different ways.
