Mistakes To Avoid Before Restarting Your Career

Restarting Career
4 min read

Restarting a career is such a bold move that not just anyone can resolve for, regardless of the amount of time spent off work.

As a mother, it can get so overwhelming to try and fit in in different work environments, not to mention, juggle between motherhood and work life. This makes it very important to identify some of the common mistakes that are likely to ensue you in your new career path. Below are some of the errors you should watch out for in attempts to start all over again:

Tame your expectations

A lot of the times it may feel like you are deserving of every opportunity in the market based on your prior experience, and that you are fit enough for different tasks in your field of specialization. Despite the success of your previous career life before motherhood, you must be intentional in containing your expectations if at all you want to be effective in the new chapter.

Ideally, the higher you set your expectations, the more you dictate what kinds of opportunities you want, and the type of treatment you demand from employers, or even in a business setup, which all draws negative energy, and might hold you back from leading a successful career.

Start with confidence

Many times, fear can hold you back from being the best version of yourself, and this also applies in matters of career. You must be willing to brace up for the new environments, new people, and even new techniques of getting things done, for example sitting for a personnel test, without necessarily feeling intimidated by the underlying situations. Starting with confidence is what helps you overcome the fear of making the mistakes you may have made in the past that threw you off bus.

Overlooking current trends

Most people do not understand that in a couple of months, many changes are realized in different industries. Do not be too stiff-necked as you come into the job market with specific skill sets and techniques, presuming they are perfect for a particular position, for they may no longer be relevant in the current time.

Instead, ensure you are open-minded with the willingness to learn and pick up the new trends relevant in your field. You can even decide to pay someone to take your online class as you keep on with the other work duties. Consider checking social media and making Google your friend, for instance, so you do not miss out on any trends.

Slacking on your current job

In this new chapter of your life, there is such a narrow room for mistakes. Make sure that on your initial days of restarting your career, you do not be boastful of your past successes, but rather, put all your energy toward being a better version of your current position. Remember there is always something new to learn from people who have been there longer than you. Be intentional on every single move you choose to take, ensuring that they align with the new goals that you set for yourself, in line with the new career path you are seeking.

Generally, restarting your career may prove to be overwhelming at first especially for first-time mothers, but with solutions anything is possible.
