We have all had days where everything we need to do seems never-ending, and no matter how hard we work, it seems impossible to stay on top of your workload.

However, it is important that you don’t let the stress of having too much to do get on top of you, and instead learn how to navigate your tasks so that you don’t feel overwhelmed.

When we feel overwhelmed, it can be easy to avoid completing tasks, simply because you don’t know where to start.  But here are some of our top tips on how you can get organized again and take back control.

Make a List

Things can soon become overwhelming and get on top of you if you don’t have a clear list of what you need to do. We quite often have intrusive thoughts throughout the day that remind us of the tasks we are yet to complete. This can cause us to feel stressed and out of control. Therefore, we recommend that you make a list of all the tasks that you need to complete, so that you can keep a track of what task is next.

Making a list also helps you to feel more organized, as you will get a sense of gratification when you start to tick off the tasks you have completed.

Prioritize

It is impossible to do everything at the same time, so you need to be more realistic about what you can achieve in one day. Think about what other commitments you have and also consider how much time each task takes to complete. If you know that you are unable to get all the tasks on your list finished today, then simply prioritize them by importance. Have a think about which tasks you can come back to tomorrow.

A quick, easy, and visual way to prioritize your tasks is to number them on your to-do list. Mark the most important items with a 1 and then continue down to trivial items at number 10. This will make it easier to manage your time, and you won’t feel guilty if you haven’t completed everything by the end of the day.

Get Enough Sleep

If you are feeling overwhelmed and are struggling to get organized again, it is essential that you are getting the rest you need as good sleep is key to getting you in the right frame of mind to be productive. As noted in this Savvy Sleeper post, poor sleep can cause your productivity levels to decrease during the day and make it more difficult to concentrate. Therefore, it is important that you learn to shut down your mind once you get into bed and stop letting distractions get in the way of a good night’s sleep.

Set Deadlines

Another way that you may react to being overwhelmed is by putting off tasks that need to be completed. Many of us are guilty of making excuses and procrastinating when it comes to completing tasks that worry us. But this can only make the problem bigger. Therefore, you should set yourself deadlines, so that you know you have to have a task completed by a certain time. Being strict with your own deadlines will mean you have no choice than to crack on with the task at hand.

Get Small Tasks Out of the Way

If you have big tasks that need your attention, then we recommend that you get smaller tasks out of the way as soon as possible. This will help to keep your head clear and focused on the big task at hand.

It is important to stay calm and try not to get too overwhelmed when you have so much to do, but these simple steps will make for a much calmer, organized, and productive day.
