4 Checks To Make When You Hire Someone

A nameplate labeled "Background Checks" sits on a green folder next to a pen, glasses, and a computer keyboard—essential tools for hiring checks when you’re ready to hire someone.

Hiring people is always going to be a major part of your job when you have a business to run. There are all sorts of challenges involved in this which you will need to overcome, and often these are more to do with the administrative side of things than anything else, such as finding the right people and so on.

In fact, there are a few checks that you will need to make whenever you hire someone new. We’ll look at a few of those now that you might want to be aware of in particular.

Right To Work

Before you do anything else, you need to make sure that the individual you are hiring has the right to work in the UK. This is a hugely important part of keeping your operation legal, and not something that you can afford to overlook at all. The truth is that there are some simple steps you need to take here - checking that they are either a UK citizen or that they have the appropriate visa. If you are hiring a non-UK person, you’ll have to obtain a sponsor licence from the Home Office first.

DBS

Next up, you need to find out whether they need a DBS check carried out or not. This is a sweep of their criminal history and any other relevant information, and it is important in cases where the employee is going to be working with vulnerable people, such as children, disabled people, and those in need. If they do need a DBS check, then it is quite common for you as the employer to offer to pay for it, though you are not obliged to. In any case, you can’t let them start without it being carried out, if it is relevant to the role.

Pension Scheme

You also need to make sure that they are put onto any workplace pension scheme that they might be eligible for. This is now a legal requirement for businesses to do, and you need to make sure that you are paying at a minimum based on a few varying factors. You can find out what those are here, but again it’s something you need to make sure that you are aware of and putting into place before you actually hire them, otherwise you might run the risk of operating illegally. You can’t overlook this essential part of the hiring process.

Contract

Finally, it’s time to draw up the contract. Again, this is a legal necessity if you are going to employ someone. The contract needs to set out a number of important points, from the expected minimum salary to the benefits that the person will receive, and what basic duties they are expected to carry out. Also, it should specify the hours they are expected to work, and the potential means for termination of the contract.

Those are just some of the vital checks to carry out whenever you employ someone, so make sure that you consider these well.
