Why Remote Work Is Best for Mums in a Global Pandemic

Global Pandemic
4 min read

Working remotely can be a challenge for mum with kids in the house, but it is not all bad news. Learn why remote working mums can ace this new challenge!

Now that the spread of COVID-19 - otherwise known as the coronavirus - has become an official pandemic. More mums are being asked to work from home for the foreseeable future. This means kitchens are doubling as office spaces and learning new ways to be productive in solitude.

The UK Government has announced that schools are also set to close to try and decrease the spread of coronavirus further, meaning children will have to stay home with those mums working remotely. This may cause more mums to work from home as they struggle to find people who can look after their children while they work, but it could also make working from home more challenging.

But fear not - before you start looking for a new job on JobRapido, there are reasons why remote working mums can benefit or thrive from the global pandemic.

1.   No More School Runs!

The first thought that may come to mind when you have to juggle work and a little one at home is how will you manage your time. Although having children around may eat up some of the time you were hoping to get work done, there are some times you will save time each day.

One of them is by not having to go on school runs during rush hour or take children to afterschool clubs. This could save you over an hour each day!

2.   Flexible Working Hours Guaranteed (Almost!)

One of the most significant demands of professionals is some flexibility in their working day, but not everyone gets it. Some mums are choosing specific careers that allow remote work.

When you work remotely, you do not have a boss looking over your shoulder and will be almost guaranteed flexible working. Some meetings may be scheduled for exact times, but in other instances, you can work in an evening once the kids are asleep and manage your time efficiently.

3.   More Support

The outbreak affects everyone, and that means dad is also likely to be at home working remotely if his job allows it. This means both of you may have more support than usual at helping with the kids, which in turn makes remote work more manageable.

4.   Exercise Becomes Accessible

Getting to the gym before work, on our lunch breaks or after work is an almost impossible feat. From motivation to logistics, there are lots of obstacles in our way stopping us exercising. This is a shame because exercise can improve our mood, reduce stress and make us more productive.

When working remotely, we can exercise from home and involve the kids. This means we can keep the children entertained and contribute to working better.

Top Tips When Working Remotely

IF this is your first time working remotely, you will soon find that it is not just unlimited coffee breaks and working in your dressing gown. It can be tough, but there are ways to make it easier for yourself. Make sure you get dressed, create a schedule and designate a new office space where the children are not allowed to disturb you.

The next few weeks or months may be a challenge – but you’ve got this!
