Boosting Your Career While Being A Mum: 3 Ways

4 min read

Juggling a career and looking after little ones certainly isn’t easy.

It is, however, highly rewarding and can be the best choice for many women that don’t want to give up having a family, or their hard-won career. Of course, a massive concern for many mums is that their career will suffer when they have children, but this doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, there are plenty of ways that you can boost your career while being a mum, a topic you can find out more about in my post below.

Try something different.

It is likely that no matter how much you love your job you have wondered whether you have picked the right career, at some time or another. Well, for some people becoming a mum allows them to explore this option in more depth.

After all, having children is a significant life change, and others will expect there to be some disruption in your work life, making it the perfect time to try another job that you always have secretly thought you might like.

In fact, you can simply say that it is a post that fits in better with your childcare arrangements and the great thing is if you want to go back to your old job, you can use the same reasoning once the kids are old enough to go to school or nursery. Something that will give you the freedom to explore other job roles whether you choose to pursue them, or you end up ultimately returning to your original career path.

Get a new qualification.

Another way that you can boost your career while being a mum is to take some time for yourself and get a new qualification, something that can enhance your CV and chance of promotion.

Of course, you will need to pick one that relates well to the field that you are in, such as a CIPD qualification for those working in HR, or a UX qualification for those working in website design.

Be sure to explore different methods of receiving this training as well such as online courses, apprenticeship and part-time courses that will fit in with your current family and work commitments. Something that can make this undertaking much easier when you have a young family.

Start your own business.

Sometimes when you become a mum, it gives you the confidence you need to break out on your own and start your own business. Of course, this can be a useful option for many mothers as you get to decide on your working hours and so it can be easier to fit around family commitments.

It is also something that can help to give mums a goal and purpose outside of the home, something that can be very important if they are used to dedicating themselves to their careers.

Also, who knows what it will lead? Perhaps you will start a business that is internationally successful, and even if you don’t, you will have some valuable experience in the commercial world that can be used to enhance your CV and boost your career.
