Becoming an accountant has always been a popular job choice for many reasons. The main one being, that if you have the skill, your services will be in demand for the rest of your life, allowing you to pick and choose your working hours to suit your lifestyle.

Every organisation and business owner needs an accountant, so as a professional accountant you’ll have no shortage of employers and clients needing your skills.

There are a few other perks to being an accountant though; for starters, and probably the most important thing, is that you will have job security. This is a comforting thought for people who want to start families, or are trying to get a house etc. You won’t have to worry about losing clients, as most clients tend to stay with the same accountant for years, provided the service is good. The same goes for job security; you'll always see an abundance of opportunities advertised on job websites and local press.

You will also find that there are loads of employment opportunities, as well as a rewarding salary. So how do you advance your career as an accountant? Keep on reading to find out more...

Become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

If you are interested in getting a head start, then you should look to getting a CPA qualification. If this is something that interests, you then you can check out these CPA exam score release dates here. If you can get this qualification, then this will help you progress quickly throughout your career, as it will give you an advantage compared to people without it.

You might be wondering why it will give you an advantage. The reason behind this is because gaining the credential is an arduous process. It is not something that can be done easily. This means that it proves to people that you are dedicated, and you know what you are doing. It is a lot of time and effort, however, if you are truly keen in progressing your career, then it is definitely worth your time.

Improve Your Networking Skills

If you are planning on advancing in your career, then it is nearly impossible to do so by yourself. This is why it is incredibly important to work on your networking skills. You will do far better if you have someone to turn to when you need advice, ideas or just general guidance.

Building up your network will take time and effort, just like becoming a CPA. However, it is very much worth doing and you will regret it if you try to go it alone. You might also find that knowing the right people will help you progress faster in your career. People network for all sorts of reasons, some want friends, some want people who can help guide them, whilst others appreciate the people who can help them advance in their career.

Keep Up to Date With All New Technology

If you are truly interested in advancing in your career, then you can’t forget about keeping up with technology. If you manage to pass your CPA exam and get a good network of people behind you, there’s no point in continuing if you aren’t going to keep up with the times. Make sure you keep up with any new laws, as this will give you the technical competence to give advice to your clients.

Accountancy is a great career for people who are really interested in it. There’s much more to it than being good with numbers though, so if you are thinking of going into accountancy and want to progress quickly, then you need to make sure that you know what you are doing.
