Mums Earning Money: Working Around Raising a Family

4 min read

Raising a family is an expensive job, and not all of us are able to simply take a break from working while we look after our kids.

The reality is that for many families, it’s important that both parents are bringing in an income or they can risk losing their home or simply not being able to afford to live. But as your children’s primary caregiver, working around them can be tricky, and it’s not just as simple as going back to work full time while they’re in childcare. Often the cost of nurseries, childminders and nannies is higher than what we’re able to earn, creating quite the predicament. Thankfully there are a few ways around this, and it’s possible to earn money around your family. Here are some ideas for going about it.

Part time work

If your children are now in school, or you have help from family for a few hours a week when it comes to childcare then working part time might be a possibility for you. You could return to your career if you had one before starting a family; but if not, a simple job cleaning, working in a shop or waiting in a cafe/restaurant are things that suit mums for working part time. The downside to part time work like this is that although you’re only there for limited hours, the hours are fixed meaning you have to make sure you’re there and on time for all of your shifts. So if your childcare falls through, your children are unwell or you need to take them to an appointment you have to arrange time off. Which some employers can be a little funny about.

Home based work

Unlike with other types of jobs, home based work can really be fitted around your day. You can do it when the kids are in school or in bed for the night. Since it’s all done on your laptop you could do it on the commute to your regular job, or even to a coffee shop if you want a change of scenery. Blogging and freelancing are both examples, or you could find part time remote work for a company. Things like writing, live chat and other customer service roles can sometimes be done from home.

Your own business

Having your own business is fantastic when you’re raising a family, you’re the boss so you get to call the shots. You could buy and sell items for a profit or sell crafts you’ve made. You could become a tutor and pass the skills you have onto others. You could be a mobile cleaner, beautician, hairdresser or other career depending on your skills and experience. If you’re starting a mobile business in a new area, your first job would be to get qualified and take a course, and then get yourself a suitable vehicle. Companies like Quick Car Credit allow you to spread the cost rather than being stuck paying the whole thing up front.
