Your home office – how to create the perfect working from home environment

4 min read

Working from home is certainly something many of us aspire to do. And when you’re a parent it means that you can bring in an income without having to spend your hard earned money on childcare expenses.

You also get more time with your little one, while they’re little.

However, working from home only works when you have the right environment around you. Setting up on the sofa surrounded by the kids toys and TV blaring away isn’t ideal and before long, you’re going to struggle. Due to the challenges, distractions and time pressure you’re going to be facing as a working from home parent, having the right workplace is essential to your success. To give you some guidance, here you’ll find some simple ways you can create the perfect working from home environment.

Good luck!

Find the right space

Preferably away from distractions and somewhere away from the main traffic of the house. You don’t necessarily have to decorate, unless the wallpaper is peeling and the skirting boards are in need of some TLC – check out skirtingsrus.co.uk for some of the latest designs – but just somewhere you can concentrate without too much distraction is the baseline of your working environment.

Let the light in

Natural light is your friend. And at home you can take full advantage of it. Gone are the days of the fluorescent bulbs of a communal office, you have your own space now. Open those blinds and keep those windows clean. A nice view will help you to feel a little less isolated, but as long as you don’t feel like you’ve been working in a cave all day, you’ll feel comfortable and motivated.

Let your personality flourish

This is your workspace, so make it work for you. Fill it with the things that make you happy (but not too much clutter) and express yourself. Think of your workspace as a blank canvas. So, place all your favourite books on a new bookshelf above your new desk. Get yourself a laptop in your favourite colour and buy the accessories to match. Surround yourself with pictures of friends and family and things that inspire you! You’ll be able to draw comfort and motivation from your surroundings. Remember, your workspace dictates how well you work!

Hold the distractions

Working from home is a precipice of distraction. One which you could fall into at any moment! You might have just gone to adjust the thermostat, but you can see the kettle in the kitchen and you suddenly fancy a break. Try to keep the distractions at bay by keeping everything you need within reach of your workspace. Get yourself a little kettle for your office or install an app that allows you to adjust the lights and heating with one tap on your smart phone. Keep your snacks in your drawer!

Invest in comfort

Investing in a comfortable chair means that you’ll be less distracted by aches and pains and you won’t be in pain later on in the evening. Choose one that’s ergonomic.
