Questions to Ask Yourself Before Applying for a Home-Based Job

Job Applications

Picture it: you are in need of a job, but life is getting in the way—you’re too busy with other things, maybe you just had a child and are looking at blogs on maintaining a career as a mom, or you just graduated and you don’t want to confine yourself within institutional walls again. The point is you don’t want to go out and search for 9–5 corporate jobs.

Then, in a stroke of luck, you come across one of those sites that host job listings and find out about home-based jobs. It seems perfect for you. It’s flexible, you can work in the comfort of your own home, and you can say bye-bye to commuting. That’s all good and dandy, but there are questions you have to ask yourself before diving into the world of home-based employment.

To help you out, here are some things to consider:

Do I like the jobs offered online?

There is no denying that people are more productive when they’re doing what they like. If you hate your job, you have a higher tendency to produce sub-par output. If you can, it’s better not to settle for jobs that are only tolerable. So, before anything, choose the jobs you apply for carefully.

Look for fun jobs online. Browse through listings and see what interests you. Online home-based jobs are generally different from on-site jobs, not just in structure but also in scope. There’s plenty of fish in the sea of home-based employment.

Does it fit my lifestyle and personality?

Let’s break the misconception that home-based jobs are A LOT easier than office-based ones. Sure, there are advantages, but it doesn’t mean that home-based jobs are the definite winner for everyone. It’s apples and oranges. Apply only for office-based work if you’re okay with the following situations:

  • A home-based job means you are isolated when at work. Other people prefer having coworkers around when they work as they are more productive that way.
  • Since you are working alone, there is no one to pester you constantly with unfinished tasks. As a result, you might become complacent and unproductive.
  • Home-based jobs need discipline, most of all. You need to manage your time effectively and avoid distractions.
  • You need a conducive working space. Sure you can work on your bed or on the couch, that is, if you’re strong enough to resist the temptation of sleeping or watching TV. Check if a clutter-free table or desk with ample lighting will do for you.

Do I see myself achieving my goals if I apply for a home-based job?

Most people work towards something in their life—be it fame, money, a comfortable life, dream house and car, and the opportunity to travel to many places. If you’re one of those people, then figure out whether a particular home-based job can help spur you forward.

For instance, if you want to be a writer for a living, then ask yourself if the home-based job you’re applying for can help you improve your craft and maybe, someday, get published. If you don’t find a job that’s fulfilling to you, it’s going to be extremely difficult during the bad days—and there WILL be bad days.

Is the company I’m applying for the right one?

This applies to office jobs as well, but in home-based work, you have to be more careful in selecting the companies you apply for. The nature of home-based jobs is the detachment between you and your employer—sometimes that detachment is more than physical. When deciding on a company, do your research and make sure that it’s the right one.

Generally, you want companies that keep employees happy. There is no other way to do this but research:

  • What are the rules and regulations they enforce on their employees, and are you okay with these?
  • Are they flexible? Does their work schedule fit yours?
  • Do they compensate employees adequately?
  • Do they offer stability and security?

To sum it up

Home-based employment has been gaining momentum over the past few years. In 2016, one in three workers in Australia works from home. This surge in the industry is not slowing down anytime soon.

Just as there are a lot of reasons to choose to work from home, there are also things to ask yourself before you jump the gun. You have to consider things like personal preferences, flexibility, and kinds of companies, among other things.

Keep in mind that home-based employment has its own set of rules. In reality, however, these rules are not rigid. Go about it however you want. Just make sure that at the end of the day, you’ve chosen a job that’s both fulfilling and offers security equal to an office-based position or even more.
