Why Working Mums Should Find Time to Exercise

4 min read

Working mums face some of the craziest schedules in the world. They’re often juggling a job, managing a household, and taking care of their children all at once.

Despite the busy schedule, it’s important for working mums to recognise that finding time for themselves is equally as important. Having me-time is an opportunity to recharge and re-calibrate in the midst of all the craziness.

The Independent sees exercising as the essential me-time activity because of its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, and increase positive emotions. Exercising should be a regular activity for everyone.

So with that in mind, here are some reasons why working mums will greatly benefit from exercise:

Exercise reduces stress

Working mums are up to 40% more stressed than other people owing to the amount of things they’re responsible for every day. Because of this, they’re very prone to anxiety and fatigue. In a series of interviews by Design Week, they talked to mums facing these exact problems and found that many of them use exercise as a way of coping with anxiety and stress. One of the mums they talked to was Becki Wilson, a designer and creative director. She said that despite her busy schedule, she sets aside time for running because it helps give her the headspace she needs to keep things in check. Running has made her more mindful and ultimately, more in control of her life despite the busy schedule.

Exercise helps with post-natal recovery

Getting back to your regular size from your post-baby body may seem like a daunting task, but remember that post-partum body confidence is possible. Working out after giving birth is a great way to regain body positivity and self-esteem. Moreover, stretching exercises are ideal for new mothers needing help with abdominal repair and back problems. Yoga for example is a good way to release your lower back and hips after nine months of strain. Women’s Health shared how you can even include your baby in your workout. Strap your baby to your chest and perform simple bodyweight moves like lunges. It is a great way to get back into shape and bond with your baby at the same time.

Exercise is a walk in the park

Exercising doesn’t need to be a chore. The key to sticking to it is finding something you enjoy doing. Going for long walks is another way of being physically active while enjoying time with your children. Very Well Fit recommends that parents use pushchairs for long walks, as carrying a baby on your back for a long period of time can cause unnecessary strain. iCandy explains how modern pushchairs are suitable for multiple terrains, which means you can take your children anywhere, be it a short trip to town or an afternoon walk through the local park. So walking with your baby after work could quickly become a healthy daily habit that helps you improve your wellbeing.

Our post 'Work Life Balance Tips for Parents’ shares that ‘working smart’ is one of the best ways to attain a work-life balance. At first, exercise might seem counterproductive to achieving it. It might feel like it’s an additional thing to check off your very long to do list. After a while however, you’ll realise that regular exercise is actually what keeps you energised and motivated for longer periods of time. This change of habit might be the key to ensuring you’re giving the best version of yourself in work and at home.
